March 2017 - The 2013 Triangle Block Shiraz Viognier is a wine dedicated to Yalumba’s long association with the Eden Valley and the Shiraz that it has sourced from this cooler climate region. The name, Triangle Block, plays homage to one of Yalumba’s oldest surviving centennial Shiraz vineyards. The wine, with a small addition of Viognier, is the embodiment of Eden Valley, where Yalumba started its Viognier program decades ago. Showcasing its cool climate origins, this is not big in body or stature. What you get is a wine with lifted aromatics and dark red fruit flavors of currants and plums that are vibrant with noted fruit intensity on the backend, nuanced a floral element and some earthy, tar notes. Offering good fruit purity, there’s nice underlying acidity that keeps it fresh, while the tannins have enough grip to suggest this should drink well over the next 5 years.

(Best Buy) A modern take on an old-fashioned style of Eden Valley shiraz, this is bold in flavor but not at all massive - more about stamina and grace than density and weight. Its flavors of red currants, jasmine and tar have forthright power, a zesty blast of shiraz spice that leaves a clean, fresh taste in its wake. This performs far above its price, a wine to buy by the case and enjoy this winter into spring.

Winemaker Notes

Triangle Block 2013 Shiraz is all dark and brooding fruits. This is a dense wine with briar and dark forest fruits like dark mulberries and blackberries. The high-toned red fruit edge reminds us that this is from the cooler hills of Eden Valley. The palate is all precision and energy with a refined purity of Shiraz. It shows an acid tightness enveloping the mid-palate fleshiness and then the gravelly tannins complete this brooding package. Cellar for 5-7 years. Drink with sage and rosemary crusted lamb with redcurrant sauce and a watercress salad.
