Shaw + Smith is a unique winemaking company founded in 1989 by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith. Michael was born and raised in the Barossa, and in 1986 went to the UK to study for the Master of Wine exam. Martin studied winemaking at Roseworthy College in South Australia, and also at the University of Bordeaux, and at the same time Michael was in the UK, Martin was working as a flying winemaker in Europe. They decided it was time to return home and start making wine together in Adelaide Hills. Their shared vision and complimentary skills made for a synergy that has stood the test of time. It has been almost thirty years, Michael and Martin love what they do and the critics love the final product.

Adelaide Hills is a unique region because it is higher, cooler and wetter than the surrounding wine growing areas of McLaren Vale and Barossa. Over the past decade Adelaide Hills have become quite trendy with many producers sourcing fruit from this cooler climate area for the production of Pinot Noir or Sauvignon Blanc. Shaw + Smith owns two vineyards in the Adelaide Hills totaling 136 acres under vine. The focus is on varieties that seem to really enjoy the cooler climate of the Hills, and they have limited their range to four wines: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay for the whites, and Pinot Noir and Shiraz for the reds.
