Stellekaya is a boutique winery with a cellar in the town of Stellenbosch in a beautiful old building which also houses the cellars of a number of other boutique producers. The focus has always been on making red wine from noble varietals which are sourced from vineyards in the Stellenbosch appellation. The first bottling was in 1999 and they have made a name for themselves since that time.

Since 2004 the winemaker has been Ntsiki Biyela who comes from a very unlikely background. Growing up immersed in traditional Zulu culture in rural Kwazulu Natal, Ntsiki rarely came into contact with wine or went into urban areas. A scholarship to Stellenbosch University and the decision to study winemaking changed a lot of things for Ntsiki, and upon arriving in Stellenbosch she marveled at all the grape vines, never having seen this type of agriculture before. Her dedication and hard work paid off and in 2009 she won the Woman Winemaker of the Year in South Africa, beating out the competition with the quality of her wines and her confident personality. Ntsiki is more than a winemaker, she is a role model for other women who want to overcome obstacles to work in the wine business.
