Wapisa

Wapisa Malbec 2016

Wapisa Malbec 2016 95 pts James Suckling

Tasting Notes

The nose offers deep dark fruit upfront, somewhat brooding, black plum and blackberry, with a touch of herb and suggestions of chocolately oak, which is nicely integrated into the fruit aromatically. Medium fuller to fuller bodied, quite structured in the palate, there’s a core of embedded tannins working perfectly with the denser, darker fruit core. Savory, more than fruity, this is compact and layered, loaded with dark fruit that picks up some spice on the back end that leads to an impressive finish. This is a top notch effort on a cooler climate Malbec.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

95 pts James Suckling April 2018
This is a focused and savory malbec with dark plum and blackberry character on the nose and palate. Full-bodied, layered, rich and flavorful. Lots of chocolate and spices. Long finish. A new wine from this region for the owners of Tapiz. Drink now.

Winemaker Notes

"Wapisa" is the indigenous Patagonian word for "whale." Not only do whales frequent the nearby coast of our vineyards, but a local legend talks of a wapisa that actually lived on land. Our wines, like the wapisa, are an expression not just of their soils but of the nearby ocean as well. From the Ortiz family.
Located in San Javier, Rio Negro, Patagonia, Argentina, Wapisa is just 25 miles from the Atlantic ocean. Wapisa is the only winery that exists in this unique coastal terroir. Our vineyard "Finca Los Acantilados" is an estate that stands out for its lime clay soils, good acidity and little organic matter. This is complemented by outstanding thermal amplitude as maritime breezes push in for the night, leading to balanced and fruity wines with a delicate varietal expression.
