Vina Quebrada de Macul is on the outskirts of Santiago in the Maipo Valley. The vineyards are in the foothills of the Andes. Owners Ricardo and Isabel Pena produce the Domus Aurea, one of Chile’s great wines, from this 45 acre vineyard. The vineyard is divided into five different blocks that follow the depth and stoniness of the soil. The Pena family is committed to extremely low yields and such attention is taken to the smallest detail that the harvest is not determined based on the ripeness of a vineyard block, but rather it is decided vine by vine.
The vineyard is located in the Macul part of the Maipo Valley, which is some of the oldest vineyard land in Chile. That is in part due to its proximity to Santiago, which has grown out almost to the vineyard. The vineyard is situated on the slopes of the Andes, and has a soil composition and climate very suitable for growing Cabernet grapes. This vineyard, in the Upper Maipo Valley, is some pretty special dirt when it comes to making world class Cabernets.
