Tyrrell's Rufus Stone Heathcote Shiraz 2013

Tyrrell's Rufus Stone Heathcote Shiraz 2013 exceptional....

Tasting Notes

In the year 1100 Sir Walter Tyrrell was on a hunting expedition with King William II. A poorly aimed arrow fired by Sir Walter glanced off a tree and struck William II, AKA Rufus, and killed him. A stone was erected to mark the spot where Rufus died. Sir Walter’s ancestors decided to leave England in favor of the new colony of Australia. The king is dead, long live the king.

This is an impressive bottle of wine and shows why Australia is known for its Shiraz. Generous dark fruits of plum and dark berry are accentuated with light Asian spice notes and a touch of white pepper on the nose. Medium fuller to fuller bodied, this has a core of bright dark berry flavors of dark plum and dark cherry, which are vibrant and pure, with a savory edge of light white pepper, while the tannins are noted but are in perfect balance with the fruit. The savory component counters the beautiful black fruit with a stony, mineral element coming through on the impressively, long lingering finish. This has exceptional balance with a core of delicious fruit that will keep you coming back for another glass. Impressive wine for the money…

Promises throaty flavour and delivers it well. Blackberry, cloves and mint with a slip of well-measured chocolatey/creamy oak. Seals the deal through the finish. Reliably good.
93 pts Huon Hook June 2015
Very deep, dark red/purple colour; rich, ripe black fruit aromas, with subtle deftly handled oak. The wine is full-bodied and ample, with abundant tannin in good balance, the finish long and full, while the flavour is mineral and ‘iron tonic-like’, typical of Heathcote. Long, firm finish, with a minerally quality which lingers and a major final grip.

Winemaker Notes

The deep rich colour of this wine indicates its intensity. The nose is full of ripe plum and dark cherries with a hint of white pepper and sweet vanillin. The flavours carry onto the palate which is full of big soft fruit, but balanced by an elegant oak structure and natural acid, resulting in a rich wine with a complex and fresh structure.
