Tokara

Tokara 'Director's Reserve' Red 2017

Tokara 'Director's Reserve' Red 2017 outstanding - exceptional vintage, exceptional wine

Tasting Notes

5/13/20
Initially on opening this was somewhat closed, with the oak influenced notes of cedar and vanillin being somewhat disjointed with the assorted red and dark fruit tones. With ample aeration those oak influenced aromas start to fold into the red and black fruit with graphite and bay leaf coming forth. With further aeration a lovely baking spice component came into the mix along with a touch of licorice richness. Medium fuller bodied, this has a gorgeous suppleness with finer grained tannins that are ripe and firm at the same time, meshing harmoniously onto the fruit creating an almost seamless mouth feel. Assorted dark red and dark berry fruit flavors lay out beautifully across the mid palate offering layered complexity and engaging depth that flows into an impressive finish. Still quite young and primary this should really develop into a real stunner. Although with proper aeration this drinks gorgeously now, the real reward will come to those with patience. This is another very impressive offering that shows the strength of the vintage and the dedication of the folks at Tokara to create such a seamlessly balanced wine with such engaging complexity.

Winemag.co.za - 2020 Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report Top 10
Beautiful aromatics of red and black berries, some pleasant herbal character and a hint of vanilla. The palate is full bodied with dense fruit, fresh acidity and fine tannins. Possessing layers of flavour, the finish long and dry, this is a very stylish offering.

Winemaker Notes

This wine is a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. The grapes originated from Tokara’s premium vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain outside of Stellenbosch.
The wine has stunning depth of colour with an intense garnet centre and a ruby rim. The nose showcases complex aromas of ripe red and black fruits with hints of dried cranberry, baking spice and graphite. The wine enters the palate with incredible purity and focus. Flavours are those of dark cherries, blackberries and ripe plum skin. Sumptuous and full there is a hint of spice on the mid-palate which leads to fine, firm tannins on the finish.
