Tokara 'Director's Reserve' Red 2015

Tokara 'Director's Reserve' Red 2015 extremely limited....5 Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Tasting Notes

The aromatics start off a bit shy and reserved on opening but with a little patience classic notes of cedar spice, tobacco and graphite along with some dried herbs come forth over a mélange of black currant and dark plum on the nose. Medium fuller bodied, this has a core of deep dark and darker red fruit flavors, with black currant most pronounced, that are nuanced with an engaging spice, light herbal component, with firm but nicely integrated tannins on the back end that says this will age beautifully.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

5 Stars 2020 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Classic 5-part Bordeaux-style blend, cab-led for structure & complexity. Admirable polish, cassis at 2015’s (95 pts) core but given wings by cigarbox spicing, espresso notes. Streamlined body yet hidden power. That rarity, delicious, but a great future, like 2014 (94 pts).
94 pts Tim Atkin MW
Cabernet-dominated with 29% of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, this is a very stylish Simonsberg red blend that has the balance and concentration that are typical of the best 2015s. Savoury and complex with layers of tobacco, earth and red fruits and refined oak. 2020-30.
93 pts Decanter
Perfume, cocoa, thyme, complex. Sweetly ripe, silkily soft and genteel in the mouth with wonderfully integrated oak. Feels effortless.

Winemaker Notes

This wine is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot, 4% Malbec and 3% Cabernet Franc. The grapes originated from TOKARA’s premium vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain outside of Stellenbosch.
The wines spent a total of twenty-two months in 62% new French oak - the rest being older French oak barriques. During maturation the wines received four racking’s, all done barrel to barrel. The wine was bottled in January 2014 without fining or filtration. 21 000 bottles were produced.
The wine has stunning depth of colour. Displaying intense garnet centre and a ruby rim. The nose is displays intense aromas of red and black fruits with hints of dried herbs, baking spice and graphite. The wine enters the palate with amazing clarity. The flavours are those of dark cherries, black berries and ripe plum skin. There is a hint of spice on the mid-palate which leads to fine, firm tannins on the finish.
This wine drinks well now but will benefit from ageing until 2030.
