Consistently among the best Bordeaux red blends in South Africa, this combines 67% Cabernet Sauvignon with lesser amounts of Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Serious, modern and stylish, with mint, cigar box and graphite notes, fine-grained tannins and scented oak. 2018-27.

The 2013 Director's Reserve Red is a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot with 5% Cabernet Franc and 5% Malbec. It sees 22 months in 54% new oak. The nose is one of the best I encountered from Tokara on this visit with vivid blackberry, boysenberry and floral scents, almost as if there were a splash of Syrah in the blend. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, cedar and sandalwood infusing the black fruit that segues into a Chinese five-spice tinged finish. This is an impressive Cabernet from Tokara.
4 ½ Stars 2017 platter’s South African Wine Guide
Opulent cab-led Bordeaux blend with merlot, petit verdot, cab franc & malbec (67/16/7/5/5). Smoothly textured tannins, oak & 15% alcohol subsumed into abundant fruit. Powerful New World style with balance, structure & pedigree to age, though already so tempting.
