Tierra Divina Vineyards specialize in producing old vine malbecs from selected vineyards in Mendoza. There is an interesting story that starts with Patrick Campbell moving to Sonoma in 1974 following a Philosophy of Religion degree at Harvard. Working as a vineyard manager and part time musician, he ended up spending three years at a Zen Buddhist community on Sonoma Mountain. Following that, he purchased the nearby three acre Lauren Glen Vineyard, which he grew into a big brand known for its high quality Cabernet. In the early 1990s he discovered the untapped potential of Lodi and found old vine zinfandel and carignane vineyards which had been neglected. He started nurturing these old vineyards, some dating back over 100 years, made some unique and vineyard specific wines from the old vine fruit. In the late 1990s he made an equally important discovery, this time it was old vine malbec in Mendoza, and so Tierra Divina began.
The discovery of somewhat neglected old vine malbec was a similar discovery for Patrick as the Lodi discovery had been. The pull was even stronger though, because at the time there were no North American winemakers working in Mendoza. Winemaking is concentrated in Lujan de Cuyo and the Uco Valley regions, both of which are responsible for the world class malbecs which have made Mendoza famous. All the Tierra Divina vineyards are sustainably farmed, and have an average age of 80 years. Being so early to discover that Mendoza had a huge untapped potential for old vine malbec, Patrick was early on the scene and able to secure a number of superb vineyards before the rush for vineyard land was on. Three labels are produced, Terra Rosa, Tierra Divina, and Vale La Pena, all specializing in old vine fruit.
