Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2017

Tesselaarsdal Pinot Noir 2017 the best Tesselaarsdal to date - 95 pts Tim Atkin MW

Tasting Notes

Fruit source is 100% un-irrigated vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge
A lovely nose that features a nice floral component that becomes more noted with aeration, with a savory, light herbal and underbrush note to the higher pitched red fruits, strawberry, raspberry and cranberry aromatically. Medium bodied, playing toward the elegant side of the varietal, still very tightly structured, this has terrific balance with an enlivening under current of acidity backed with lighter, but finely tuned tannins that give shape and definition to the vibrant and juicy, sweet red fruit flavors in the mid palate. A savory note comes through on the back end countering the wines mid palate sweetness perfectly, leading to a long, dry finish. This is still quite young and evolving, but even at a young age, this shows tremendous potential. Lay this down for several years and you will be greatly rewarded.

Food Accompaniments

Pork, duck, mushroom risotto

The 2017 Pinot Noir from Tesselaarsdal (one of my discoveries in 2017) has an attractive bouquet of crushed strawberry and red currant aromas and a touch of undergrowth in the background. The palate is well balanced with lovely, slightly plump red fruit, but there is energy and tension throughout. This is a beautifully proportioned Pinot Noir that stays true to the grape variety. Superb.

This is the best vintage yet of Berene Sauls’ Pinot Noir, made at Hamilton Russell by Emul Ross. Floral, nuanced and refreshing, it’s very much a Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge style, with gentle, fragrant raspberry fruit and bright acidity. A Cape take on Chambolle-Musigny. 2019-25

Winemaker Notes

Probably the best Tesselaarsdal to date, the 2017 has greater depth, structure and plushness of palate than 2016 (and even 2015) without sacrificing the clean, lifted blue fruit that is a characteristic of the best Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Pinot noir. This is a wine with the tight minerality of the old-world and the pure sumptuous fruit of the new-world.
The wine has a lovely, fine, bright sour red berry character and even hints of violets on the nose. It has a more lifted acidity and tightness, bright and elegant start to finish with a hardening line of minerality placing it more in the old-world than the new. It is distinctly feminine and elegant with a lovely dusting of grape tannins
