Stellenrust has a history that goes back to 1928 and is one of the Cape’s largest family owned wineries. Stellenrust has an impressive 400 hectares of land, about half of which is planted to vine and this is split between two premium areas of Stellenbosch, the Helderberg and Bottelary Hills. The Helderberg has been responsible for producing some of the Cape’s most award winning red wines. It is also known as the “Golden Triangle” and the three points of the triangle are Somerset West, the town of Stellenbosch, and the Helderberg mountain. Bottelary Hills is a raised area between Stellenbosch and Cape Town, and receives the South-Easter off False Bay which helps to cool down the vines during summer. With such a large amount of vineyard land at their disposal they are able to produce some premium wines.
One of the fun things that sets this winery apart is that they allow people to make their own wine using completely natural methods, which means no machinery. Participants get to pick and stomp their own grapes which are then fermented by natural yeasts and can be collected one year later.
