Stark-Conde

Stark-Conde 'Three Pines' Cabernet 2013 - Last Btl

Stark-Conde 'Three Pines' Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 another impressive offering from Jose Conde

Tasting Notes

10/18/16
Sourced from a high elevation site overlooking the Jonkershoek Valley just on the outskirts of Stellenbosch city, this single vineyard offering has positioned itself as one of the Cape’s finest. Made by Jose Conde and team the 2013 is a good follow up to the exceptional 2012. Leafy notes, are upfront, with a light peppery lift, give this a lovely varietal herbal note, with some graphite, earth and wet tobacoo spice underpinned with with black currant fruit aromatically, this is spot on varietal. The palate is sweetly fruited countered with more savory earth and graphite nuances to the black currant fruit flavors. The tannins are slowly starting to meld into the fruit and suggest that althought this shows well now (given some serious aeration time of course) it will only reward patience. Buy a few bottles, try one and then put the remaining aside and come back in 2-3 years and go from there. You will find out in due time that you should have purchased more.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

94 pts Tim Atkin MW 2015
Having done a vertical tasting of this impressive Cabernet-based blend, I can confirm that it ages extremely well. The 5% each of Merlot and Petit Verdot have added an extra dimension to the wine since their inclusion. Graphite, green pepper, dense savoury tannins and restrained power. Drink: 2015-25

Winemaker Notes

This Three Pines Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon is based on the best block of Cabernet in the vineyard— a higher elevation block with a finely textured decomposed granite soil with a clay sub-soil and a gentle Southwest-facing slope. The wines made from this vineyard (including our single-vineyard Syrah) always seem to have good ripeness coupled with good natural acidity and a unique floral note that sets it apart from the other blocks of Cabernet.
Blend: 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot
