93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2017
Grown at altitudes between 200 and 400 metres, this Jonkershoek Cabernet contains 15% Malbec, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and is focused, nuanced and beautifully framed. Fresh and herbal, it has fine-grained tannins and very pure, mint and graphite flavours. 2019-27

Solid, with lots of dark tobacco and baker's chocolate notes coating a core of steeped plum and black currant fruit. The fruit and tobacco notes meld nicely through the muscular finish. Best from 2018 through 2022.
91 pts Wine Enthusiast Top 100 Wine of 2018 - #86
There's a leathery, tobacco-like seam throughout this bold Cab, adding intrigue to the black plum and cassis core. Hints of char and roasted coffee give a rich impression to the palate, which feels plush and velvety in texture yet well-structured and defined. The finish is long and evolving, with an enduring grip and final notes of cigar box and black-fruit skin. Drink 2021–2025.

Winemaker Notes

The grapes for this wine are from 4 different cabernet vineyards and our best merlot, Malbec, cabernet franc and petit verdot vineyards, all at a mix of different elevations. Although all are on the decomposed granite soils typical of the hillsides in Jonkershoek, the soil textures vary quite a lot and that, together with the differences in elevations and clones, gives a variety of different flavor profiles to the grapes. At dryness, the wine was basket-pressed and racked to barrel for malo lactic fermentation and barrel maturation. Only 300l French oak was used, of which about 30% were new. Bottled with a light filtration after 20 months barrel maturation.
