Southern Right Pinotage 2017

Southern Right Pinotage 2017 The finest to date? Extremely limited

Tasting Notes

A savory top note of light oak spice and a touch of a smoky, earthy component gives way to red berry fruit tones on the nose. Medium to medium fuller bodied, this is elegantly structured but offers up good fruit intensity that has a sweet and juicy entry with notes of raspberry, dark cherry and plums that show excellent energy and vibrancy. As the wine works it way through the palate it picks up a stone fruit, cherry pit note on the finish which counters the wines sweetly fruited mid palate, playing the sweet and tart interplay to perfection. With air this gains flesh and suppleness while acidity gives freshness and lift, supported by ultra fine tuned tannins. With its vibrant fruit core and sleek tannins this should drink impressively over the next 3-4 years. One of the finest we have tried so far from this esteemed label?

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 Pts Jeb Dunnuck
“Blackberries, smoked earth, cherries, and a touch of wood smoke and meatiness emerge from the 2017 Pinotage. Brought up in a mix of mostly used barrels, it’s medium-bodied, silky, and elegant on the palate, with fine tannin and integrated acidity. It’s a beautiful expression of Pinotage that has loads of character. Enjoy bottles over the coming 3-4 years.”

Anthony Hamilton Russell is on a mission to get Pinotage taken seriously as a cool climate grape. This structured, slightly reductive style is sappy, sweet and aromatic, with understated wood. 2019-25

Winemaker Notes

Southern Right is re-defining Pinotage with this intense classically styled, clay-grown wine, packed with complex berry fruit, beautiful tannins and subtle wood spice. Full ripeness and the longer hang-time afforded by cooler sites, combined with the complex, more classic fruit aromas and structure resulting from clay-rich soil, make this wine a highly individual expression of South Africa’s unique grape variety.
