Simonsig 'Redhill' Pinotage 2015

Simonsig 'Redhill' Pinotage 2015 93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2017 - showing the strength of a great vintage.....

Tasting Notes

Always lavishly oaked, here a combo of around 80% French and 20% American, all new for 15 months, the strength of the vintage has allowed the new wood to get soaked up nicely by the fruit. The nose offers up an engaging combo of sweet dark berry fruit with shades of vanilla and spice that shows good integration, considering its youthfulness. Medium fuller bodied the fruit flavors of dark cherry and plum are multi-layered, with some oak spice chiming in, showing good concentration and density with smooth tannins and lifting acidity bringing this to a lengthy conclusion. Still young and evolving this should really hit its stride in several years and drink beautifully for 5 plus years after that.

Food Accompaniments

Seared tuna, slow roasted pork belly, oven roasted rack of lamb, crispy duck salad with hazelnut praline.

The Malans’ top Pinotage comes from a single bush vine site and saw a mixture of French and American oak, all of it new in 2015. It’s a dense, ambitious, age worthy style with stylish wood integration, with dark berry sweetness, silky tannins and supporting acidity. 2020-29.

A lot of vanilla character, highlighting the dark fruit here. Full-bodied, round and linear with a polished and driven finish. A smart wine texturally. Should come around nicely with a year or two of bottle age when the new wood goes away. Drink in 2020

Single vineyard named after the soil colour. All-new oak, third American, 15 combines rich berry fruit with spice, vanilla, on a bed of polished, suave tannins. What pinotage can become in the right hands, a sensory experience.

Winemaker Notes

The 2015 harvest is definitely one for the books. We had the earliest start in decades. Warmer weather in August resulted in earlier bud break, after which a warm, dry, windy summer accelerated ripening by approximately two weeks. The dry weather also led to a very healthy vintage. The healthy vineyards delivered grapes with beautiful layers of fruit and we are very excited about the results of the 2015 vintage.
The wine displays an inky black centre with a bright rim. Attractive black berry and plum flavours with a cinnamon spice twist. Vivacious layers of black cherry and vanilla coats the palate. The wine is full yet elegant, with lush textures and a lingering finish.
