Sherwood Pinot Noir 2014 - Last bottle

Sherwood Estate Pinot Noir 2014 90 pts Wine Spectator

Tasting Notes

The 2014 Sherwood Pinot Noir is one of the finest Pinot Noir we have tried from Sherwood over the course of a number of years. A deep ruby red color gives way to a nose with notions of spice, a hint of toasty oak and underbrush overlaying the plum, wild strawberry and cherry fruit. Savory but displaying excellent fruit purity on its medium fuller frame, the red berry and plum flavors spread out beautifully across the mid palate which takes on a supple, silky texture as it opens up. The tannins are finely tuned leading this to a very long and impressive, finish with a touch of cherry pit coming through on the back end. Quite young and evolving this should develop nicely over the next year and show well for 2-3 more years quite easily.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 pts Wine Spectator Web Only - 2016
Ripe and rich, with jammy edges to the concentrated cherry and wild berry flavors, this has pepper, sage and earthy accents, and good concentration on the finish. Drink now through 2026.

Winemaker Notes

The Sherwood Estate 2014 Pinot Noir was produced from selected parcels of grapes grown on our Waipara vineyards – the Terraces, Georges Road, Church Road, Glasnevin and Stirling. The fruit was harvested in excellent condition over a two week period starting in mid April. The harvested fruit was tipped directly into open top fermenters and cool soaked for up to six days. The cap was hand plunged three times a day during the indigenous fermentation and skin contact lasted for an average of 24 days. It was then pressed and put into oak barrels for nine months for malolactic fermentation and maturation. The wine was then blended, lightly fined with egg whites, filtered and bottled.
