Rust en Vrede Estate 2015 5 Stars 2019 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

5 Stars 2019 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Iconic cab-syrah since 1988, still one of Cape’s jewels. Dense, concentrated black fruit on 15 (*****) (95 pts) (with 9% merlot) shows layers of complexity & detail; heady fynbos, taut earthiness, supple texture. Beautifully crafted for cellaring like 14 (92 pts).
93 pts Jeb Dunnuck
A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Syrah, and 9% Merlot brought up 18 months in French oak, the 2015 Estate reveals a deep purple color as well as notes of red and black currants, tobacco leaf, candied citrus, and Asian spices. This rich, ripe, sexy wine is full-bodied, with loads of fruits, ripe, sweet tannins, plenty of mid-palate oomph, and a great finish.
92 pts Wine Spectator 12/31/18
This has a slightly rugged edge, with tobacco, bramble and sage notes framing a core of steeped black currant and fig fruit. Cedar and alder details score the finish, which has good juicy energy. Should unwind a bit more with moderate cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
90 pts Wine Advocate Issue #245 Oct 2019
Comprised of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Shiraz, and 9% Merlot, the 2015 Estate Red opens with a dense dark-fruited nose with oak spices and purple wildflowers. The palate moves to express more dark chocolate and coffee notes with plush open-knit fruit with subtle oak tones, unfolding with a tight mineral grip. With a long clean finish, the wine is full-bodied, showing a complex concentration of fruit, oak and earth. Almost 57,000 bottles were bottled after spending 22 months in French oak, just less than half were first use. This wine is making me daydream of char-grilled ribeye.

Winemaker Notes

Crimson red. Gentle floral aromas of violets and jasmine are backed by hints of fresh leather and tobacco leaf, mulberries and forest floor. The palate replicates the nose with earthy flavours brought forward by dark fruits which include blueberries and blackcurrant, all integrating well to create a lengthy finish with soft velvety tannins.
Ageing Potential: 10 to 15 years.
