Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2017

Reyneke Chenin Blanc 2017 93 pts Vinous/Neil Martin - Wonderful.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

93 pts Vinous/Neil Martin Aug 2018
The 2017 Reyneke Chenin Blanc was matured in used 300-liter French oak and Mittelberger foudres. It has a very different bouquet than the 2016, featuring lifted yellow plum, mirabelle, jasmine and light linseed aromas. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, quite poised and full of tension. The citric acidity delivers a very fresh finish. This blossoms in the glass, eventually achieving a very high level of quality. Wonderful.

One of two very different Chenins from the Reyneke team, this fresh, appley, concentrated white is textured, leesy and effortlessly concentrated showing very subtle wood and a long, chiselled after taste. 2018-24.

Bright and pure, with a stream of Jonagold apple, jasmine and white peach notes pouring through, carried by a racy, verbena- and straw-tinged finish. Drink now through 2020.

Winemaker Notes

We believe there's a lot to be said for the way winemaking used to be. There were no chemicals, no "technological advancements" that made the process a process, and natural balance was more important than balance sheets.
Some people dismiss it as old-fashioned nostalgia, but we like to think of it as ancient wisdom. And we embrace it as much as we can. Not just because it's better for the earth, but because it makes for better wine.
The Chenin Blanc is harvested from a single vineyard on the Biodynamic farm Reyneke, located in the Polkadraai Hills to the west of Stellenbosch. The vineyards are the oldest on the farm being in excess of 50 years old and are located on a combination of decomposed granitic loam on a clay sub-soil. The grapes were whole bunch pressed before light settling and then fermented in a combination of 300l second-fill French oak barrels and a 2500l foudré. The wine was then aged on its lees for 10 months with a further two month aging in stainless steel tank before bottling.
This wine presents a bright straw hue with a lovely bouquet of fresh mandarins and kumquat followed through by floral notes and honey comb undertones. The palate has a beautiful freshness with a tight linear structure. Layers of citrus fruit, washed stone and spice carries through to a long aromatic finish.
