Reilly's Barking Mad Riesling 2008

89 pts Wine Spectator - Lime flowers and green pear character, finishing with focus and length.

Tasting Notes

Ten years and going strong, with a least ten more to go, this is a testament that Riesling is one of the world’s greatest white varietals. Even on an inexpensive wine the class of the varietal comes to form, especially in light of its bottle age. Bottled under a stelvin screw cap the color has a light golden color but still retaining a brighter pitch to it, not dull, which says this still has vibrancy and life. Aromatically this has a lot of things going on. Starting off with the classic diesel notes that come with age this also offers some quinine and then dried lime leaf and faint pear/apple fruit, with an oxidative element that is in balance as well. Medium bodied, with stony mineral infused fruit, here the fruit is a secondary issue, with all the cool aged funkiness one expects from a Riesling with some bottle age. An undercurrent of acidity that the Clare is famous for leads this to a dry conclusion with a lick of salinity and citric cut. This represents tremendous value.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

89 pts Wine Spectator Magazine
Dry and steely with bracing lime, lime flowers and green pear character, finishing with focus and length. Needs seafood.

88+ pts Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (JR)
Light green-gold. Pungent pear and apple aromas are underscored by dusty mineral and white flowers. Juicy and pliant, with open-knit orchard fruit and melon flavors and a subtle citrus note on the back. Softer than most Clare rieslings, with good finishing sweetness.

Winemaker Notes

Single vineyard source. Estate grown. Early morning pick to arrive at winery cool. Immediate destem crushing and only free run to final wine. Cooled fermentation over 4 weeks. Sweetness adjusted with non fermented juice sterile filtered and packaged in Stelvin closure.
