Raats Red Jasper 2015

Raats Red Jasper 2015 serious bottle of wine for under $20

Tasting Notes

2/5/18
This has an aromatic profile that lets you know something really exciting is going to unfurl in your glass. Assorted fruit tones reminding of black cherry, boysenberry and blackberry are interspersed with tobacco spice, a touch of earth and loam, along with dark chocolate and a whiff of licorice. Medium fuller bodied and bursting with assorted juicy red and darker fruits, some spice and savory tones come into play as well; this has an engaging textural quality, with a finer grained tannin base giving focus and firming up the back end. Concentrated, but not overly extracted or big in body, this has good fruit intensity, complex and beautifully balanced, the classic iron fist in a silk glove, finishing dry and lingering. This should really come together with a little more bottle age, although it’s showing well now, this has good mid term aging potential.

Food Accompaniments

Roast beef, grilled aged sirloin or rib-eye, venison dishes.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

92 pts Wine Advocate Issue #230 April 2017
The 2015 Red Jasper is a blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 36% Malbec, 9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It has an elegant bouquet with a light marine influence infusing the blackberry and boysenberry fruit, hints of green bell pepper and peat. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, well balanced and perhaps a little more broad shouldered than the other 2015s from Raats, yet with great persistence and freshness on the Loire-like finish. Apparently this has been an enormous success in the United States and I can understated why.

A fresh tobacco leaf note leads the way, pulling juicy red currant, plum and red cherry fruit behind it, while fresh acidity gives this ample cut to match the fleshier, toastier side. Nicely done. Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2018 through 2022.

Evocatively named, Red Jasper is a cuvée of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, aged in older wood. It’s a grippy, firm, slightly chewy number with mint, cassis and damson notes. Needs time to soften. 2017-22

Blackberries, plums, lavender and spices. Full body, grippy tannins and a spicy finish. Drink in 2020. A blend of 48% cabernet franc, 36% malbec, 9% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 2% petit verdo

Winemaker Notes

The 2015 is a true gem: exceptionally intense and complex on the nose with blackberry, black cherry and bramble in abundance and subtle hints of forest floor, dark chocolate, aniseed and spicy tobacco. The walk in the Black Forest continues with blue –and blackberry dancing on a tight rope with focus and concentration, following through onto a perfectly balanced, fine-grained, velvety palate. The finish lingers with hints of fresh mint, cinnamon and perfume. Complex and structured, a true iron fist in a silky glove.
