Earthy tones of fresh tilled soil, licorice root and sweet char lead the bouquet of this wine, grounded by the ripe black-fruit core. Velvety in texture, yet somewhat firm in structure, the palate boasts flavors of ripe black cherry and berry that carry through to the finish alongside hints of curing spice and hickory smoke. Drink now–2021.

The 2015 Dolomite Cabernet Franc, which comes from lower-lying areas in Polkadraai and matured in fifth and sixth-fill barrels, has a punchy bouquet with smoke and Tuscan cured meat infusing the black and red fruit. There is lovely definition and vigor on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, touches of bell pepper and oregano infusing the black fruit, with good backbone and structure on the finish. It needs to partnered with some hearty meat dishes to get the most out of this.

Step up 15’s tight tannin plumped out by plush cherry, pronounced blackberry fruit, extended by cab franc’s typical herbal tone. Worthy (& well priced) successor to fruit-driven 14. Will give pleasure for a good few years.
