Penley 'Phoenix' Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Penley 'Phoenix' Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Wine Spectator 2017 Top 100 - #48

Tasting Notes

Jan 2018 - Offering up a combo of earth toned notes of tobacco and cedar spice with a saline, olive note to the fruit flavors of cassis and plum, this has noted palate depth and a supple texture. Medium fuller bodied, this has good fruit concentration and density, while the tannins are finely tuned and powdery giving good structural support and are just now starting to integrate into the fruit. If you drink now please decant, or otherwise, lay in down for a year or two and then enjoy over the next 5 plus years after that. With aeration this fleshes out nicely, displaying an impressive modicum of refinement and complexity, finishing with good length and persistence.

Dense tannins and flavors are packed into this wine, with briny Kalamata olive and black licorice nuances to the core of plum, cassis, sage, tobacco and cedar flavors, which fan out on the finish. Drink now through 2030.

Deep garnet-purple in color, 2015 Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of crème de cassis, licorice and dark chocolate with hints of dried mint, earth and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous black fruit and menthol flavors. Structured with a firm backbone, it finishes with great length

Winemaker Notes

Vibrant aromas of dark berries and black fruits, blackberry, mulberry, plum and a touch of licorice. Subtle floral notes intertwine with the dark core of fruit. Subtle hints of smokey oak add complexity and savory notes. The palate is medium bodied with fine grained tannins. Succulent acidity adds lift and freshness to the dense brooding fruit. This is a complete and harmonious wine with great persistence of flavor. Bright and delicious, speaking of contemporary Coonawarra Cabernet. Ready to drink now or for enjoying the rewards of cellaring for the next 5-7 years for some secondary fruit characters to shine through.
