Oldenburg Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 - Last Btl

Oldenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 excellent and built for ageing

Tasting Notes

Nov 2016 - Notes of lightly charred oak and graphite offer a savory cast and underpin dark berry notes on the nose of the 2012 Oldenburg Cabernet. Medium fuller bodied this is quite tight on opening while offering nice fruit purity in the dark fruit spectrum, while the tannins give some definitive firmness that says this is made for the long haul. There’s more than enough sweet fruit evident, so this should harmonize in a few years. If you can’t wait, match it with something that has some fat content to cut through the tannins, otherwise give this 2-3 more years.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 pts Tim Atkin MW 2015
Made with grapes from Banghoek, a mecca for Cabernet lovers, this is grippy and focused. Its tannins and oak sweetness are matched by dark berry fruit, a graphite-etched finish and plenty of refreshing acidity. Drink: 2015-21
90 pts Vinous - Stephen Tanzer May 2017
14% alcohol): Bright red-ruby. Classic varietally expressive, pure aromas of cassis, tobacco leaf, licorice and dried herbs. Silky, suave and intense on the palate, with lovely integrated acidity giving punch to the currant, raspberry and herb flavors. Very suave, energetic, midweight wine with no hard edges. Finishes with a serious dusting of tannins and lovely subtle length and lift. Serious young Cabernet, although the herbal element gained with air.
4 ½ Stars 2016 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Underlies serious cab player status with 12, following on from brilliant 11(*****) with similar concentration & intensity, fine woven tannins & fruit purity – but without the extraordinary finesse we noted last time. Perhaps more of a sleeper vintage, requiring patience.

Winemaker Notes

Ripe cherry hues describe the colour. A herbal pot-pourri of oregano, thyme and bay leaf announces the nose. Toasted almond and buttered toast describes the oak. The wine is laced with red fruits, the palate shows a muscular structure composed of balanced acidity and lively, layered tannins. The wine ends robust and meaty which indicates that it has great longevity.
