Odfjell winery was started in the late 1980s by Norwegan ship owner Dan Odfjell. The brand has multiple references to nautical terms, and for Dan it was the opportunity to go somewhere completely different from his native homeland, and use his entrepreneurial skills in a way that is not possible in Norway. Part of what attracted Dan to Chile’s Maipo Valley was the weather, with abundant sunshine so different from the rain of his homeland. Dan’s two sons, Laurence and Dan Jr, are active in marketing and serving on the board of directors.
While the land was acquired in the late 1980s it was not until 1994 that the first vines were planted in the Maipo Valley. Today Odfjell follows the model of many Chilean wineries, sourcing grapes from different areas to take advantage of Chile’s diverse climate and geology, and make single vineyard wines from a variety of regions. In this way they make a Cabernet from Maipo near Santiago, a Carignan from the Maule Valley in the south, and many wines in between. Odfjell has 85 hectares planted in Maipo and 115 hectares in total, with all vineyards being 100% organic and a strong emphasis on biodymanic farming.
