Clive Jones, winemaker at Nautilus Estate since 1998, blends this wine from five sites in Marlborough, using fruit from the Clay Hills in the Southern Valleys as the backbone. He works in a gravity-flow winery, gives the fruit a five- to seven-day cold soak and then ferments without added yeast. The time this wine spent in French barrique lends it finesse rather than weighing it down with wood tannins. It’s delicate and subtle in the aroma, then grows more expansive with scents of fresh red currants and forest floor. The texture is succulent, even as the wine remains restrained and finely balanced. Ready to decant with roast squab or other game birds—and don’t forget the wild mushroom stuffing.

Winemaker Notes

The 2012 Nautilus Pinot Noir is dark ruby in colour. The nose reveals fragrant aromas of wild raspberries, morello cherries and Christmas cake. The palate is soft and medium bodied. Refined and balanced, this elegant wine shows good intensity and a lengthy finish.
