Molly Dooker is Aussie sland for a lefty or left handed person, and this wine brand has achieved world wide success for its larger than life, decadent and almost over the top style of winemaking. Sparky Marquis and Sarah Watts, both leftys, met while studying winemaking and got married a few years later. They both came from a wine background (Sparky’s family had a vineyard and Sarah’s family had McLaren Vale property Fox Creek) and they both did well in their studies. Starting with very little capital in the early 1990s they started buying fruit and making wine in a rented winery space in McLaren Vale.
After achieving remarkable success with a US importer under the label Marquis Phillips, they had to start all over after growing too quickly which caused the brand to fail. They went back to buying fruit and making wines in the style they had become known for. At one point after starting over they were down to $17 in their bank account and faced with the prospect of not being able to pay growers or employees. They got a lot of help from family and then outside investment, and in 2006 they received huge praise from US wine critic Robert Parker, who named their Boxer Shiraz the best red value in the world. Following that they received a string of high ninties scores for their wines and sold all their inventory. With the cash they paid off their debts and purchased some land in McLaren Vale and built a state of the art winery.
Molly Dooker is known for making a style that is all about enjoyment and not contemplation. The trademark style is rich, velvety wines, and this is partly achieved by late picking and also by a special watering program in the vineyards. Sarah and Sparky have honed in on a style that seems to have success in the market place, and in a decade have gone from starting over to having fifty employees and a thriving business with a world wide reputation.
