Meerlust Rubicon 2012

Meerlust Rubicon 2012 shows all the signs of being another outstanding effort

Tasting Notes

The 2012 Rubicon is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, respectively, with a 20 month oak regimen in 65% new French barrels. Even at its youthful age, with 4 years under its belt, it shows all the signs to be another superb offering. The nose is quite complex, offering up notions of cedar, licorice, and spice to the dark red fruit notes of plum and currant. Medium fuller bodied, the dark red fruit flavors are given energy and freshness by the wines underlying acidity which makes this quite juicy, while the finer grained tannins give structure and firm things up with some cedar spice and pencil shavings/graphite pushing through on the long, dry finish. This has an engaging sleek textural feel and vibrant fruit with beautiful tannin integration saying you can drink me now, or put me away and with patience you will be rewarded with 8-10 years of great drinking down the line.

A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot, the wine was matured for 20 months in French oak, 65% new. It shows more red than black fruit and attractive oak-derived notes. There is some pyrazine character in evidence but this presents as a subtle and winning leafiness. Unapologetically old school in style, it’s medium to full-bodied with fresh acidity and fine tannins. It should keep the classicists happy

Winemaker Notes

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 14% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot

The 2012 Rubicon is another superb expression of this iconic Cape wine. Very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Very classic Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note and stony minerality also evident on the nose. Still youthful and intense, promising further maturation potential. The palate is full bodied, structured by beautifully sleek, ripe tannins which restrain the vibrant dark fruit typical of this vintage. The wine lingers on the palate with creamy fruit mouthfiilling linear tannins.
