Meerlust Rubicon 2010

Meerlust Rubicon 2010 5 Stars 2016 Platter's South African Wine Guide

Tasting Notes

This shows lovely aromatic lift with spicy, savory tones meshing with vibrant fruit notes. Upfront cedar and a touch of chocolately oak soon gives way to a lifted spice and perfumed floral note that’s underpinned by licorice and dark currant and dark plum fruit aromas. Quite refined on the palate on opening, with aeration it gains flesh on its medium fuller frame. The tannins are rounded, but powdery giving this good tension and firmness on the back end, while the core of fruit is impressive for its vibrancy and purity with fruit flavors of dark plum and dark currant. This picks up a nice savory note on the impressively long, refined finish. This is just now starting to open up and is quite polished out the gate and should continue to show well over next 10 years.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

94 pts Tim Atkin MW
A good example of a modernised Cape classic, Rubicon is great to drink at five years and will mature well thereafter. Subtle oak, graphite, autumn leaves, cassis and fine-boned tannins: this wine is remarkably complex and a brilliant follow-up to the 2009. Drink: 2015-25.
5 Stars Platter's 2016 South African Wine Guide
Superlative 10(*****) follow sensational 09, maintains classicism of this flagship cab-dominated (65%) Bordeaux blend. Plush, the dark fruit absorbs & integrates the oak influence (60 new, 21 months) within complex, dense structure. For the long haul.

Winemaker Notes

62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot
The 2010 Rubicon is a classic vintage of this iconic Cape wine. Very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Very classic Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note also evident on the nose. Still young and intense, promising further maturation potential. The palate is full bodied, structured but packed with fresh dark fruit and rounded, linear tannins.
