MWC (McPherson Wine Company) Shiraz Mourvedre 2016

MWC (McPherson Wine Company) Shiraz Mourvedre 2016 90 pts Wine Spectator - great value

Tasting Notes

This wine has a history of over delivering and the just released 2016 continues the theme. The fruit base is dark, blackberry and blueberry, with nice concentration and depth nuanced with a savory cast of characters that combine spice and earth tones. Medium fuller bodied the tannins have nice supporting grip with good focusing firmness to say that although you can drink now, this will reward good mid term aging. Vibrant and spicy, this plays a perfect balance between the wine’s savoriness and dark fruit flavors.

Food Accompaniments

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 pts Wine Spectator 6/15/18
Dark and brooding, with dense blackberry, blueberry and Earl Grey tea flavors in a fragrant and expressive mix. Cedar, eucalyptus and black pepper notes gain momentum on the finish. The firm tannins provide appealing velvety traction. Drink now through 2028.

Winemaker Notes

Rich, with elegant and supple tannins; this Rhone inspired wine is a lovely blend of cool-climate spicy Shiraz combined with mild climate full-bodied Shiraz finely tempered by the savoury tannins of Mourvedre. This is a bold, modern Australian wine exhibiting aromas and flavours of blackberry and spice. The rich and full palate is complemented by hints of French oak leading to a seamless finish. Great to drink young, however time will reward those with patience...
The best way to describe vintage 2016 is fast & furious! There was no orderly ripening of fruit, no luxury of white fruit followed by red fruit, it was like the flood gates opened and everything just rolled in at once. Again we had little rain and a very hot spring leading up to harvest, which meant things ripened faster than normal. Optimum flavours and ripeness came on more quickly than previous years and the only way around it was to pick as fast as we could. Thankfully we worked our way through it, and the resulting quality is excellent.
