Kumeu River 'Mate's Vineyard' Chardonnay 2013

Kumeu River 'Mate's Vineyard' Chardonnay 2013 always one of the finest in the New World...

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

93+ pts Wine Advocate March 2016
The 2013 Mate’s Vineyard Chardonnay has delicate lime blossom, lemon curd and yuzu with hints of fresh herbs, baker’s yeast and chalk dust. Light to medium-bodied and very tightly-knit at this youthful stage, it has fantastic intensity of citrus and mineral flavors with a very long finish.
93 pts Vinous May 2016
Pale, bright straw-yellow. Sexy clove and nutmeg notes lift aromas of nectarine and smoky, iodiney minerality; distinctly Burgundian in its aromatic profile. Lovely tactile stone fruit flavors are enlivened by harmonious acidity and some unabsorbed CO2. Showing much more personality today, not to mention greater breadth, than the very backward 2014 but this wine is even dustier, saltier and more gripping on the long aftertaste. A faint touch of youthful bitterness leaves the palate vibrating. (An earlier bottle of this wine was of equal quality but was more dominated by its minerality and much less open to inspection.)

Winemaker Notes

The Mate’s Vineyard is usually the most reserved and unyielding when young, and this is even more so with the 2013 vintage. The nose is very closed, just giving hints of the golden queen peach and mineral notes expected from Mate’s Vineyard. On the palate, however, the flavor is very concentrated and distinctly richer than the other 2013 wines, while still maintaining a perfect balance and freshness that sets this wine apart and makes it wonderful. This is a wine of immense concentration that will be very long-lived.
