Koyle Royale Carmenere 2013

Koyle Royale Carmenere 2013

Tasting Notes

Sept 2018 - The 2013 Koyle ‘Royale’ Carmenere is blend of 85% Carmenere, 8 % Cabernet Franc and 7% Petit Verdot, respectively; this was aged for 18 months in French oak. The oak plays nicely against the varietal’s natural spiciness adding a mocha/coffee bean component to the peppercorn, wild herbs and subtle menthol, earthy undertones that are infused into the black fruit aromas on the nose. Medium fuller bodied, the tannins are sleek with enough firmness for focusing grip, giving this a smooth textural feel, with a core of layered, spicy dark fruit flavors, leading to a long, lingering finish. This has nice balance between the varietal’s spicy herbal notes and fruit without any excessive green overtures that can afflict the varietal. With some extra bottle age this is now starting to find its sweet spot and should drink impressively over the next 2-3 years.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

89 pts wine Advocate Issue #22 Dec 2015
The 2013 Royale Carménère from Los Lingues Estate fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in barrel for 18 months, a standard for the Royale range. This is still very young, 20% of the barrels were new and the oak is still in need of some time in bottle to get integrated. The oak aromas are relative, of course, as the Gran Reserva has no new oak whatsoever and the Royale does, so a direct comparison brings them out. However, this has more depth in the palate, more complex flavors and greater length. Medium-bodied, balanced, fresh and not green, I wish more Carménère had a profile like this.

Winemaker Notes

The grapes were picked in extremely small, selected parcels (less than one bottle per plant) from high density vines in our Los Lingues Estate, biodinamically farmed, coming from granitic rocky soils, where the roots can bring the minerals and complexity of the rocks. The vineyards are carefully pruned, with almost no irrigation, to express as much as possible the terroir. At optimum ripeness, the grapes are hand-picked in small boxes and brought to the cellar for careful sorting. Vinification is conducted in small tanks to get the best extraction of aromas, flavors and silky tannins. After fermentation, the Koyle Royale Carmenere is aged in French oak barrels for eighteen months, with no filtration.
The 2013 vintage of Koyle Royale Carmenere has a dark purple color. It has pure and clean wildforest aromas, with a vivid array of black cacao, intense spiceness and some orange peel notes. On the palate, it is firm and balanced. The tannins are silky and rounded, with a long, lingering finish that is influenced by the addition of Petit Verdot to the final blend. This wine should be decanted 30 minutes before serving.
