Khalix 'Tomal Vineyard' 2011

Khalix 'Tomal Vineyard' 2011 63% Malbec & 37% Cabernet Sauvignon co-fermented

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

90 pts Vinous/Stephen Tanzer March 2016
(from a vineyard planted in the 1950s; the Malbec and Cabernet were co-fermented): Bright medium ruby. Muskier and nuttier than the Toko, showing a less primary dark fruit character but more smoky rocks and minerals on the nose. Then minerally and fresh on the palate, offering excellent lift and definition to its flavors of black cherry, licorice, chocolate and coffee. Finishes juicy and harmonious, with firm, sweet tannins. This is excellent.

Winemaker Notes

Khalix is Greek for limestone and refers to the predominant limestone character of our soil profile at 3,000 feet elevation in Mendoza at the foot of the majestic Andes. The Tomal Vineyard, meaning "old" in the native local Indian language, was planted in the 1950s and so is one of the few old vine Malbec vineyards so close to the Andes. The vineyard boasts a very high content of limestone sub soils, complete with many white round rocks just under the surface.

The process of co-fermentation allows for a more seamless integration of the different aromas, flavors and textures which each varietals is bringing to the table.
