Awards, Reviews and other Notes

95 pts James Halliday Australian Wine Guide 2016
Old vine grenache given 14 months in old French oak. Intense red and black berried flavors, sweet but not confected and with layer after layer of savory spice, tannin and assorted other delights. Terrific grenache. Smoky, almost gravelly aftertaste. Length.
93 points Vinous 3/2016
Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2013 Annexus has a nose of kirsch, red roses and raspberry preserves with hints of clove studded orange peel and dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied with great freshness and purity, the palate delivers loads of red berry preserves and spice flavors with velvety tannins to texture the long finish.
92 points Wine Enthusiast 6/2016
John Duval (ex Penfolds) has finally released a varietal Grenache, a wine that's quite different from the blends and Shirazes he's done up until this point. This is supple, full in body and round, without the firm structural elements his wines typically possess. Dare I say it's hedonistic? Black cherry and cinnamon notes are juicy and mouthwatering on the long finish. Drink now–2020.

Winemaker Notes

The 2013 Annexus Grenache was hand-picked from two very old, low yielding Barossa Vineyards, both 100 years old plus. Fermentation took place in small, open top fermenters incorporating 20% whole bunches. The wine then matured for 12 months in 100% French oak hogsheads (older barrels).
T A S T I N G N O T E S : The 2013 Annexus is vibrant purple-red in color. The nose reveals perfumed red fruit aromas alongside secondary savory spice and charcuterie notes. On the palate, plum and raspberry characters shine. The mouthfeel is generous, rich, and textured with heaps of impressive flavor intensity carried along the palate through the long, dry finish.
