Hewitson 'Old Garden' Mourvedre 2007

Hewitson 'Old Garden' Mourvedre 2007 exceptional

Tasting Notes

Dean Hewitson is regarded as one of Australia’s top winemakers and Hewitson is considered as being in the top echelon of Australian wineries. Sourcing fruit from throughout South Australia’s most famous wine regions, Hewitson works with some of the best old vine vineyards these regions have to offer. South Australia is home to some of the world’s oldest vineyards and many are pre-phlloxera, which makes them more closely linked the original vines of Europe than anywhere else in the world. Combining Old World winemaking techniques with New World innovation and knowledge the wines from Hewitson are recognized for their balance, complexity and engaging fruit characters. From exceptional vineyards comes exceptional wines and Dean Hewitson does a masterful job of making some of Australia’s more interesting wines.

The wines for the Hewitson ‘Old Garden’ Mourvedre come from a vineyard planted in 1853 by Friedrich Koch. Planted near Rolland flat, halfway between Lyndoch and Tanunda in the Barossa Valley, this old bush vine vineyard is reported to be the oldest plantings of Mourvedre in the world.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

Deep ruby. Vivid aromas of raspberry, cherry-cola, fresh rose, incense and minerals. Lively, finely etched red berry flavors are reminiscent of New World, warm-climate pinot, with candied floral and mineral notes adding complexity. Sweet and seamless on the finish, which strongly echoes the raspberry and floral notes. There's no way that I'd have guessed this to be mourvedre.

The 2007 Mourvedre Old Garden was sourced from a vineyard originally planted in 1853. Dark ruby-colored, it displays a perfume of damp earth, underbrush, smoke, mocha, and blueberry. Smooth-textured, layered, and potentially complex, this balanced, structured wine will evolve for several years and offer a drinking window extending from 2012 to 2022.
