Greywacke: A variety of sandstone generally characterized by its hardness, dark color and poorly sorted angular grains of quartz, feldspar and small rock fragments set in a compact, clay-fine matrix.
The name Greywacke is a reference to the grey stones which are found not only in the vineyards of Marlborough, but on beaches, mountains and in rivers across New Zealand. The wines of Greywacke are produced by Kevin Judd who has been making wine in Marlborough for longer than most other people. Kevin was born in England and grew up in Australia, then studied winemaking at Roseworthy College, and after a few vintages in Australia moved to New Zealand in 1983 where he went on to become the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay who made famous the Kiwi style of Sauvignon Blanc.
Back in the early 1980s there was very little viticulture in Marlborough, of course now that has changed quite dramatically. At the time he started at Cloudy Bay, there were only five wine producers in Marlborough. Kevin did 25 vintages at Cloudy Bay and helped pioneer the style of Sauvignon Blanc which took the world by storm. After a long time at Cloudy Bay, Kevin decided to pursue his lifelong dream of making wines under his own label, and in 2009, with the help of his wife Kimberly, Greywacke Wines was born. He had registered the name Greywacke in the 1990’s on the hunch that he would want to use it someday on his own wines.
Their home vineyard is located in the Rapaura region of Marlborough, and in addition they source fruit from the central Wairau Plains and the Southern Valleys of Marlborough. The wines are made by Kevin at another winery nearby. Their focus is strongly on Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc but they make several other wines in small amounts.
In addition to wine, Kevin has developed a parallel career as a photographer who does vineyard scapes and anything to do with wine. His passion and inspiration for both of his careers has been the natural beauty of the Marlborough region, and he has published a couple of books featuring the most comprehensive collection of pictures of Marlborough vineyards. Kevin’s career has had an immeasurable impact on the Marlborough wine industry and he is still busy creating world class wines and leaving his mark.
