Glenelly is situated on the slopes of the Simonsberg, just outside the town of Stellenbosch. The farm is steeped in history, having been originally granted by Simon van de Stel, second governor of the Cape. The farm changed hands a few times until it was purchased in 2003 by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who was the owner of the famous Bordeaux property Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. It is hard to doubt the pedigree of the young winery given the history of its founder. May subsequently sold her Bordeaux property which allowed her to focus solely on her Stellenbosch property, Glenelly.
Glenelly has become a name to watch in the short decade since it was purchased by May and turned into one of the Cape’s top wineries. The winery facility is a state of the art, gravity flow building, and May spared no expense to produce premium wines, much like she was used to in Pauillac. Soils studies were completed and focus is given to Bordeaux varieties. The results speak for themselves which include a 5 star rating in the Platter Guide for the flagship wine, the Lady May. This is definitely a winery to watch, and we can expect more great things to come.
