Glenelly

Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011

Glenelly Estate Reserve 2011 a well made blend with some bottle age that's just now hitting its sweet spot

Tasting Notes

Aug 2018 - 40% Cabernet, 40% Syrah, 10% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot - from vineyards on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain with neighbors such as Rustenberg and Thelema. The 2011 Glenelly Estate Reserve red is a blend of equal parts of Cabernet and Syrah, coming in at 40% each, with 10% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot rounding things out. With some bottle age this wine is now hitting its sweet spot with a good number of years to go. The nose has taken on some interesting aromatics with notes of herbs, tobacco leaf, cedar spice and espresso that flow into plum and dark currant fruit. The palate has good concentration and depth to the flavors of red currant, plum and blackberry fruit with a touch of licorice, tar and herbal nuances surfacing through on the finish, which gives it a rustic, savory edge. The tannins still offer enough grip to keep everything focused, indicating that this should show well over the next 2-3 years.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

Features alluring fresh espresso and smoldering juniper notes out front, followed by a rich, polished core of cassis and blackberry fruit, with a serious spine of licorice root and a long tarry edge to the finish. This still has ample grip, but there's enough development here to begin drinking now. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2020.

“Syrah performs the same role in the Cape as Merlot does in Bordeaux,” according to Luke O’Cuinneagain, speaking of its dominant role in the cuvée with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Savoury, spicy and well balanced, it’s subtly oaked, plum and blackcurrant fruity and long and refreshing on the palate. Drink: 2016-22

Deep, bright, medium ruby. Musky aromas of pepper, herbs, tobacco leaf and game convey a distinctly Old World lift, along with a positive rusticity. Dense, plush and deep but firm too, with concentrated redcurrant, plum and blackberry fruit flavors leavened by green herb nuances. This superb wine spreads out horizontally on the back end, which is very long but a tad warm today.

Winemaker Notes

Glenelly Estate Reserve is the estate's signature red blend. It exhibits great intensity and complexity, with fine grained tannins that are firm yet elegant. The rich, savory character of Shiraz is enhanced by lush, concentrated flavors of blackberry, cherry and cassis, supported by floral tones and notes of tobacco and spice.
