Fairview 'The Beacon' Shiraz 2013

Fairview 'The Beacon' Shiraz 2013 spicy black plum fruit

Tasting Notes

Jan 2018 - Fairview has an extensive portfolio but some of its more interesting wines are its single vineyard offerings. It makes three distinct Shiraz, two of which are from the Swartland, each with its own unique characteristics. The Beacon Shiraz, which comes from Malmesbury in the Swartland region, is recognized for its spice, which plays out perfectly against the wine’s backdrop of dark fruit tones. The 2013 Beacon has an engaging, perfumed aromatic profile of pepper and coriander along with notions of leather and smoke overriding black plum and black cherry on the nose. Medium fuller to fuller bodied, this has a fleshy, meaty texture with riper tannins and spice infused dark fruit notes that have offer good energy and drive, leading to long, lingering finish. Just now opening up this should drink nicely over the next 3-4 years.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

4 ½ Stars 2016 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
This Swartland vineyard is primarily about spice. 13 redolent of mixed spice as well as savoury coriander & black pepper, not to mention hints of leather, smoke, tobacco, all seasoning ripe black plum fruit.

A solid, fleshy version, with dark plum, blackberry and black cherry confiture notes pumping along, carried by brambly grip and backed by a licorice snap accent on the finish.
91+ pts Vinous May 2017
Bright ruby-red. Lovely perfume of dark cherry, spices and pepper. Concentrated, savory wine with a lot of personality and spicy depth, not to mention sophistication. Lovely saline minerality carries through the long, ripely tannic finish. A very classy, spicy, meaty wine with lovely Swartland perfume and energy. Great texture too.

Winemaker Notes

Dark ruby red in colour. Aromas of white pepper, mixed spice and black cherries, this Shiraz resemble a French Syrah from the Northern Rhone. The palate is full bodied with firm structure and evident tannins and should mature for 5 – 8 years.
