See Ernie Els wines we sell
While men may dream different dreams, they are driven by the same quest: to reach for, and to accomplish perfection. No two pursuits bare the truth of this more than the perfect round of golf and the perfect bottle of wine. So when Ernie and good friend Jean Engelbrecht (from Rust en Vrede Wine Estate) discussed the possibility to produce a wine together, the marriage of their ideas on winemaking styles and ideas quickly transformed into a strategy based on quality. Quality and excellence, no matter what.
"I have through my travels worldwide developed a passion for fine wine, for the Cape winelands and in particular Stellenbosch, the noble heart of South African wine. This classic wine was born out of a friendship and is both the culmination of a dream and a reflection of my personal style."
As one of South Africa's leading ambassadors and one of the most recognisable faces in the world of sport, it is befitting that Ernie chose South Africa and Stellenbosch to produce his wine. This idea was born from a long-standing friendship between Ernie Els and Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede. 'The strongest relationship is one built from friendship. If friendship involves families, it is even stronger. We have been planning this for a long time and it is very exciting to see it come together,' says Els.
Exclusive red wine estate, Rust en Vrede, is the only South African wine to be nominated three years consecutively as one of the Top 100 wines in the world. When the friendship and expertise of their respective professions came together, Jean and Ernie set out to create an extraordinary wine. The Ernie Els wine is a classic Bordeaux blend comprising of five varietals - Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot. The aim with the wine is to capture everything that Ernie stands for: big in stature and gentle in character.
Comments Jean, "As Ernie is setting the standard in the international sporting arena, so are we dedicated to superior quality and excellence in this unique venture".
Pro golfer Ernie Els purchased a wine estate in order to create a permanent home for his highly rated Engelbrecht-Els, a joint venture with South African vintner Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede Wine Estate.
Els, a South Africa native, and fellow countryman Engelbrecht have acquired the Webersburg estate from the Weber family, located just one mile to the west of Rust En Vrede. Located in the Stellenbosch region, South Africa's top region for red wine production, the estate totals more than 95 acres of existing vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Shiraz. Engelbrecht is adding an additional 12 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Webersburg had been producing Cabernet Sauvignon under the supervision of recently retired Meerlust winemaker Giorgio dalla Cia, though those wines have not been imported into the United States.
The acquisition gives the project and its head winemaker, Louis Strydom, complete control over its fruit source. The wine had been made from a combination of grapes purchased from the Webersburg estate and some Rust En Vrede crops.
There is a barrel-aging facility on the site, but no winery as of yet. Engelbrecht plans to build a winery facility in time for the 2005 harvest.
