El Enemigo began in 2009 when Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil attended a celebration for Nicolas Catena, Adrianna’s father and Alejandro’s employer, who had just received the Decanter Man of the Year Award. Adrianna is a historian, having received a doctorate from Oxford, and Alejandro is a soil scientist who has been making wine at Catena Zapata since 2002.
Adrianna and Alejandro share a deep respect for history and tradition, and with their wines they try to capture the feel of a time when Italian and Spanish immigrants came to Mendoza and sought to make wines that were equal or better than the wines of their homelands.
Adrianna is based in Spain with her Brazilian husband, and Alejandro lives in a small village in Mendoza and uses his contacts to source fruit from some of the Uco Valley’s prime vineyards for the El Enemigo wines.
