Tasting Notes

A subtle floral note reminding of violet subtley sits over assorted red and dark fruits along with a touch of licorice and spice aromatically. Medium fuller bodied showing noted concentration to the flavors of dark plum and red berry fruit, there’s good underlying acidity and well integrated, polished tannins with a touch of minerality on the back end. This has nice precision and drive leading into a lingering finish. This should drink impressively over the next 3-4 years.

Fermented with full clusters, the 2015 El Enemigo Malbec feels a bit closed and has a reductive personality, so decanting in advance could be a good idea. It's taken from four hectares in the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary and was co-fermented with a bit of Cabernet Franc. This is a serious, subtle and mineral Malbec, with some austerity and a nicely textured palate. This is a serious red, only eclipsed by the Gran Enemigo bottlings. It's not really about the variety, even though it has the best Malbec grapes, as they do not have any other pure Malbec; it's mineral and precise, vertical and very fresh for 2015. 22,800 bottles produced. Drink 2018-2023.

A juicy and fruity red with dark berries and salt. Fresh herbs. Medium body, linear and refined with very polished tannins. Fruity and straight up but with tension. Drink now.

A big, strapping red, with concentrated flavors of dark plum, cherry and baker's chocolate that are supported by pliant acidity and tannins. Cedary notes mix with plenty of spice on the long, complex finish. Drink now through 2022. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

Winemaker Alejandro Vigil vinified this wine, as well as his Bonardas, with about 30% whole clusters, vs. 50% for his vineyard-designated Cabernet Francs): Bright medium ruby. Tight, reserved scents of blackberry, licorice, violet and rose petal, with a whiff of leathery rusticity; showed riper, even slightly roasted fruits with aeration. Concentrated and refined on the palate, displaying surprising calcaire-driven energy and definition to its flavors of red and black berries and spices. Harmonious acidity and chalky floral lift give this ripe-but-dry wine a light touch (I'd even describe it as almost Pinot-like). Finishes with firm, gripping, slightly dry-edged tannins.



Winemaker Notes

A joint venture between Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, and Alejandro Vigil, Chief Winemaker at Bodega Catena Zapata, El Enemigo Malbec is produced at Piedemonte al Sur, located in the southern foothills of Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. The facility is named for the unique aspect of Mendoza's high altitude winemaking region nestled in the foothills of the Andes Mountains.
Rich and concentrated, it offers aromas of black fruit, cherry and dark berryfruit on the nose followed in the palate by a full-bodied wine with flavors of spice, blackberry, black cherry, pepper and a slight floral character. The finish is elegant and lengthy.
