Eikendal Charisma 2015

Eikendal Charisma 2015 5 Stars (*****) 2018 Platter's South African Wine Guide

Tasting Notes

July 2018 - The 2015 Eikendal Charisma is predominantly Shiraz (74%) with Petit Verdot and a smidgen of Sangiovese filling out the blend. This wine has been impressive over the past few years and the 2015 offering shows the strength of a great vintage. A spicy top note flows into cherry, plum and darker currant fruit tones with a touch of olive brininess on the nose. The fruit has engaging purity on its medium fuller frame that is enlivened by an undercurrent of acidity that helps preserve its freshness and vibrancy. The fruit flavors are in the darker red spectrum, layered, concentrated, and juicy with finely tuned tannins accented with a lightly savory back note, finishing long and persistent. Beautifully balanced, with noted depth this is just now starting to open up and should show well over the next 2-3 years.

Food Accompaniments

Pasta with a tomato sauce, mushroom risotto, beef, lamb, venison

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

5 Stars (*****) 2018 Platter's South African Wine Guide
Eclectic blend a signal of critical & commercial success – volumes up from 4,000 bottles in 2011 to 40,000 in current 2015 (*****) with – clearly – no sacrifice in quality. 74% shiraz, 25% petit verdot & dash of sangiovese for freshness. More charismatic than 14, rich & spicy, combines pot-pourri perfume & wild berry fruit, very concentrated but enlivened by bright acidity.

Charisma is a self-styled “Mediterranean blend”, which combines Syrah with Petit Verdot and Sangiovese. It’s quite an Italian style, even though the Sangiovese only accounts for 5%, with savoury tannins and tangy acidity and flavours of pine and black olive. Intriguing. 2019-28

Winemaker Notes

Charisma 2015 is a vision born through Cellar Master Nico Grobler’s travel experiences over the world. Shiraz (Rhône Valley) contributes a lean, fresh structure with spicy undertones. Petit Verdot (Bordeaux) ads the richness of blueberries while the Sangiovese (Italy) component adds a light character with clean fruity flavours on the palate creating a boldly seductive and elegant wine.
