De Toren Fusion V 2015

De Toren Fusion V 2015 94 pts Wine Enthusiast & 92 pts Wine Spectator

Tasting Notes

June 2018 - We were very excited to try this wine as we know and respect the producer and the previous wines we have tasted from 2015 have been a very high quality. Fusion V is a left bank Bordeaux blend (Cabernet led) from Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, a region that does all things Cabernet well from a vintage that has over-delivered. The color is youthful and dark, the nose is intriguing with notes of earth and cedar followed by concentrated fruit notes. Complex and layered, this gorgeous wine spreads out across the palate with velvety tannins and soft fruit notes mixed in with some sweet cocoa and cassis. Length and pedigree, this wine may be expensive in terms of South African wine but in light of its overall quality, it represents a solid value on the world stage. We would love to try this wine again in 10 years, at which point it should be in its sweet spot and keep going strong for another 5 – 10 years after that.

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

94 pts Wine Enthusiast April 2018
Deep, brooding scents of black plum, cherry and cassis form the soul of this beautiful, richly concentrated wine. Plenty of licorice, cigar-box spice and bittersweet cocoa ride atop the fruit core, while notes of green peppercorn, leather and tobacco flesh out the midpalate and flourish on the finish. The crushed-velvet texture offers ample tannic grip and balancing acidity to keep everything in harmony. While it's hard to resist now, this should shine from 2023–2028.

An alluring, polished, sultry style, with black tea, singed vanilla and espresso aromas giving way to suave currant and plum fruit flavors. Offers a long, fine-grained finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2022. 3,890 cases made.
4 ½ Stars 2018 platter’s South African Wine Guide
Rich, refined fruitcake - & spice – toned 15 raises cab portion of stellar 5-way Bordeaux blend to 70% from 14’s 53%. Powerful but soft textured & restrained, with seamless oak harmony (50% new). Gorgeously voluptuous now, it will reward patience.
91 pts James Suckling June 2018
Dark plums, brambleberries, plum liqueur, blueberry cake, cassis and blackberry crumble. Full-bodied with lots of deep fruit, but a firm tannin backbone that is holding this together. While a fine line of acidity keeps it all in check. Drink in 2020.
93 pts Tim Atkin MW 2018
As its name makes clear, Fusion V combines the five Bordeaux varieties, with Cabernet Sauvignon dominating the blend with 51%. It’s a perfumed, sweetly oaked style with fine tannins, supple tannins and a smooth, caressing palate. 2019-25

Winemaker Notes

The iconic Left Bank-based blend from De Toren, Fusion V is meticulously crafted from Bordeaux’s ‘Noble Five’ varietals and, with its complex flavours of liquorice, black cherry, cedar and dark berries, it offers a stylish departure for sophisticated oenophilic tastes. Soft as spun silk, with a lingering hint of sweet fruit on the back palate, this is a wine that will only improve with age.
