Dashwood is a brand that represents Marlborough as a region as a whole and also represents the small family owned farming interests. The Vavasour family is well known in the world of Kiwi wines as having been pioneers in the Awatere Valley of Marlborough. Most Marlborough vineyards are located in the Wairau Valley to the north, but in 1985 Peter Vavasour was the first to plant wine grapes in the Awatere Valley, producing the first wine in 1989. Since then the Vavasour family have used their Vavasour brand to showcase the Awatere region of Marlborough.
More recently they developed the Dashwood label to make wines that represent the best of both sub-regions, the Wairau and the Awatere. The Awatere is slightly further south and has a cooler climate, resulting in wines that are more mineral in nature. The Wairau by contrast, tends to produce more fruity wines. By sourcing grapes from both areas, they were able to produce wines of balance and character, without the overt fruity character of the Wairau.
Following this hands on approach has served them well amongst all the corporate labels that tend to come from this region. The wines are priced for everyday drinking and combine quality and affordability which have made them one of the strongest brands at their price point from New Zealand.
