This white grape is commonly grown in the Loire Valley of France, where it is known as Vouvray. It is also common in California where it is grown in the central valley and used in blends. As a stand alone varietal it makes white wines that are fragrant, high in acid and can be made from dry to medium sweet, as well as in dessert wines. In the Loire Valley town of Saumur, Chenin Blanc is used to make sparkling wines of notable quality. It is also known in the Loire Valley as Pineau de la Loire. It is the most widely planted grape in South Africa where its local name is Steen, although most South African producers are now labeling it as Chenin Blanc, and there is more Chenin Blanc in South Africa than in France.
Chenin Blanc has the ability to grow and even thrive in different places with different climates and soil types. Judging by the grape’s traditional home in the Loire Valley it seems that Chenin thrives in marginal climates, which means it likes weather on the cooler side. Interestingly, because of the high level of natural acidity, Chenin Blanc has the ability to age for many decades, and it increases in complexity as it ages. In South Africa some producers have recognized its potential and are specializing in producing this white grape. In South Africa a lot seems to depend on the soil type and success has been achieved with a combination of decomposed granite and Table Mountain sandstone. This is definitely one of the grapes that South Africa can do well and while there are many producers doing an excellent job, some producers to watch out for include Raats Family and Ken Forrester.
