Franschhoek, South Africa
See Chamonix wines we sell
It is hard to imagine a more picturesque setting than Chamonix. This unique Cape wine farm is located in Franschhoek, high up on the north-eastern slopes of the valley. The farm was part of an original farm granted back in 1688, which was long since subdivided.
The modern era of the farm began in the early 1990s when it was purchased by German born Chris Hellinger. Over the last two decades they have worked hard to carve out a niche producing some of the most awarded Cape wines. They are well known for their Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, but have a full range of wines. Possibly the most important accolade they could have received, is being named as the 2013 Platter Winery of the Year, which is a big honor in South Africa.
In addition they also have some very desirable accommodations, a restaurant and wedding facilities. Interestingly, the mountains behind the farm have some of the highest rainfall in the country, which allowes the farm to harness that as a business opportunity and become a water bottling facility as well. Their natural spring water is sold through out the high end Woolworths chain of supermarkets in South Africa. It is almost hard to wrap one’s head around everything that is going on at this wine farm. In addition to their award winning wines, very classy accommodations, water bottling and restaurant, they also have 50 hectares dedicated to a game farm. The game farm seems to be more of a hobby and is not open to the public, but guests staying at their lodges can view ostrich, eland, zebra and springbok. Though all this, they manage to maintain a sense of being a boutique winery.
