Chamonix Chardonnay 2015

Chamonix Chardonnay 2015 5 Stars (*****) 2017 Platter’s South African Wine Guide

Tasting Notes

Now recognized as consistently producing some of South Africa’s finest Chardonnay, Chamonix has produced a beauty with their 2015 vintage. The nose is enthralling with notions of sweet vanillin oak and lightly buttered toast complimented by a nutty blanched almond and hazelnut element with a citrus vibrancy that gives aromatic lift. Medium bodied and slightly creamy, vibrant citrus and nectarine flavors are enlivened by an undercurrent of driving acidity that gives this excellent length and persistence on its finely detailed finish. Some stony minerality chimes in as well on the backend. Beautifully balanced this has notable palate presence and length. This has a number of years of great drinking in front of it.

Food Accompaniments

Halibut, lobster, shell fish, chicken in a light cream sauce

Awards, Reviews and other Notes

5 Stars (*****) 2017 Platter’s South African Wine Guide
Luscious citrus on 15 (*****) merges well with toasted almond notes. Fresh acidity balances well, leading to kumquat hints on the finish. Shows greater minerality than 14. Like the Reserve, natural-yeast fermented in barrel, but with less new oak.
90 pts Wine Advocate Issue #230 April 2017
The 2015 Chardonnay spent 14 months in French oak (30% new) this year. It has an attractive bouquet with citrus fruit, grapefruit, dried honey and a touch of hazelnut, displaying good vigor and intensity. The palate is fresh on the entry with crisp acidity, fine tension with hints of walnut and linseed infusing the light tropical tones, dovetailing into an attractive and quite persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next 5-8 years.

Winemaker Notes

Our Chamonix Chardonnay is released in the first year after the harvest. The wine shows bright straw yellow colours with golden highlights and ample aromas in scents that recall tropical fruits and grapefruit, mingling with hints of oatmeal, caramel and nutmeg. Medium-bodied with richly complex flavours, mellow fruit sensations are deftly fused with oak in a long, elegant finish. It should reach its prime in about 5 years from release.
