91 pts Stephen Tanzer's IWC (70% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot): Bright red-ruby. Cassis, blackberry, licorice, chocolatey oak and violet on the nose, with a suggestion of almost liqueur-like ripeness. Then extremely fine-grained and suave on the palate, showing insidious intensity and captivating inner-mouth floral lift to its dark berry and licorice flavors. A prime example of the slow, steady ripening that was possible in the 2013 growing season. Finishes classically dry and rather powerful, with sweet tannins and excellent length. Another remarkable value from this producer. -- Stephen Tanzer
90 pts James Suckling Slightly full-throttle with lots of ripe fruit plus vanilla and coffee character from the wood use. Full-bodied and fruit-forward with a medium finish. Need some time to soften and open. Better in 2017.
88 pts Robert Parker Jr.'s The Wine Advocate (LG) 2013
The 2013 Casarena Reservado Sinergy Blend is a blend of Malbec with 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot from the estate vineyards (they have around 280 hectares of vineyards). The nose is quite ripe, with aromas of plums and a touch of banana. The palate feels fresher and has fine tannins and good acidity that shows better than the nose. 200,000 bottles produced.
88 pts Wine Spectator Brambly aromas and flavors give this plenty of up-front appeal. Dried red berry and underbrush notes dominate, with medium-grained tannins. White pepper accents show on the finish. Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2018. 800 cases imported.—K.M. |
Winemaker Notes |
70% Malbec, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit verdot.
The wine shows a dark ruby red color with notes of violet. In the nose, it's intense and concentrated, presenting notes of sweet spices from the Cabernet sauvignon and layers of ripe blackberries and plums from the Malbec. Aged for 12 months in french oak. The mid palate shows notes of vanilla and tobacco from oak aging. In the mouth, the wine is full and rich, with well integrated and round tannins, long and persistent finish. |
