Ah, the glory of ultra-high-altitude (7,200 feet!) Salta malbec. The bracing bouquet is like nothing that comes from points further south, dominated by wood smoke on a winter’s day, almost like a tequila or mezcal, with touches of spice as well; the overall effect is something like apple tobacco. It’s fiery in the mouth, at least at first, but in between the flames there are notes of candied cherries and espresso – and the finish is plenty long to enjoy them through several satisfying swishes.
